Dr. Harner explains how icing a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury within 48 hours of the accident will help ease the pain.

Dr. Harner:
The ice decreases swelling and when you have a lot of swelling, it stretches the pain fibers and it causes more pain. So if you can decrease the swelling that will help significantly with the pain. It won’t speed up the healing though, but it will help with the discomfort and pain.
