Ok, so I had the iud for a year and 3 months. I had it taken out and then i started taking sprintec about 3 days later. the first month i missed a couple of pills, but feb. i was really bad. I can't tell you how many i missed and i didn't make all of them up bc they make me sick to my stomach. I started my "period" a week early feb. 14th and didn't stop until feb. 28th. then I had that clear sticky, string discharge that you get when ovulating. this month so far I have missed 3 pills bc I have the stomach flu. Is there a chance?? We have had sex a lot in the last couple of months and twice in the past 4 days.

I'm commenting on my own comment. I started my period today even though I messed up my bcp's badly this month. It came a day early, but that is ok. Thank you to anyone who was going to comment on this.

I have been on Microgestin 24 Fe for about a year now and never had any problems until 3 months ago. I missed 2 pills and ended up having a full 7 day period during the second week. Although I did not miss any more pills, i have continued to have my period during the second week and having nothing, not even spotting during the fourth week. I was afraid to alter my pills and have continued to take them on the regular schedule. Is this normal? What should i do?

Hi,
I can see why that would cause you some concern, but I'm happy to hear that you did not miss any more pills.

The reason for you having a "period" during the 2nd week of pills, after missing 2 in a row, is that your body was experiencing "withdrawal bleeding" from the absence of hormones. Women who take hormonal contraception actually do not have a period...when they bleed during the week of inactive pills, it is actually "withdrawal bleeding" that they are experiencing (everyone calls it a "period" because it's easier to understand). So, you did not cause any harm in your body; you can have withdrawal bleeding early and it's OK.

I want to double-check to make sure that you have not had sex since you've missed the 2 pills? Anytime you miss two pills, it is important to use a back-up method of birth control (condom) for the next 7 days.

If you did not have sex since you've missed the 2 pills, then your cycle may just be off this month. If you DID have sex without a condom since you've missed the 2 pills, you may want to take a home pregnancy test just to be sure that your lack of bleeding during week 4 does not indicate a pregnancy.

Continue to take your pills on a regular basis, and your cycle should be back to its normal with your next cycle. Please know, that you can also call your doctor's office and talk with a nurse about your situation, as they are very helpful if you are still concerned.

Danie,

So you've been on the pill for three months. And in your last month, you missed 3 but only realized that you missed two. What you should have done when you realized you missed two was to take two for two days to catch up. That helps continue the protection of the pills.

What you think may have been three short periods in the last month -- the spotting -- was probably breakthrough bleeding due to the times you missed your pills. These pills have hormones in them, and by missing some you are giving your body an on-again, off-again experience with hormones. It reacts in an on-again, off-again way of its own.

But now I understand that your actual period hasn't come, is that correct? When should it have started?

I'm afraid my best advice, Danie, is that you need to take a home pregnancy test. Because your pills were taken a bit irregularly this month, yes, it's possible you could have gotten pregnant. Chances aren't super-high, but it is possible, and you need to make sure one way or the other.

And if you aren't pregnant, try hard to find a way to remember your pills better. Put them by your toothbrush and take them every night when you brush your teeth. Or tie them to another daily habit like that. You can't keep forgetting them because (a) it increases your chances of pregnancy and (b) it's not good for you.

in the future, if you miss one pill, take two pills the next day.
(So if you miss on Monday, take two on Tuesday.) Then you will be caught up.
If you miss two pills, take two pills the next two days.
(So if you miss Monday, you take two on Tuesday and two on Wednesday).
If you miss three pills, you need to throw out that pack, start a new pack and use another form of birth control for a week (like condoms).

OK? And will you come back and let us know what happens?

Ok, now this is going to be indredibly confusing, but I started the pill about 3 weeks ago. And have not been very good with them as after I while I've began to forget to take them. Anyways, in my last pack, I missed 3 of my pills, one ealier on and two next to each other towards the middle. I took these pills on additional days after my cycle had finished, to finish the packet. However, did not notice one and therefore that one was not taken. I have had my period, 3 times or more in the last month, but this may be spotting as on avergage they have only lasted 2 days. The problem is, after i finished my packet, I had unpected sex with my boyfreind about 5 times in two days, because I wasn't on my period when I should have been. Now I sometimes feel very away with the fairies, need to urinate more often and more depratly, have mild constipation, feel I need to eat more often lower back pains, cramp and feel very tierd all the time yet my sleeping patterns are very up and down. However, these feelings are not exteme and I believe I could just be over exajurating them? Could I be pregant? Danie x
